The remains of fortified trading-posts, erected between 1482 and 1786, can still be seen along the coast of Ghana between Keta and Beyin. They were links in the trade routes established by the Portuguese in many areas of the world during their era of great maritime exploration.

Insight I

This heritage site includes 3 castles, 15 forts, and several other structures. Among them, St. George’s d’Elmina Castle (1482) is considered one of the oldest European buildings outside Europe and is believed to be the first point of contact between Europeans and sub-Saharan Africans.

Insight II

The sequence of colonial rule over this region reflects the shifting power of Western European nations (Portuguese → Dutch → British).

Insight III

Due to the abundant natural resources (especially gold) of the Gold Coast, colonial incursions led to the rise of powerful local states. Over time, the region transformed from a network of fragmented tribal communities into structured empires such as the Akwamu Empire and the Asante Empire. The Asante Empire became so powerful that it engaged in five wars against the British (Anglo-Ashanti Wars).
