The church, baptistry, basilicas, public buildings, streets, monasteries, houses and workshops in this early Christian holy city were built over the tomb of the martyr Menas of Alexandria, who died in A.D. 296.

An early Christian pilgrimage center in Egypt, originating from Menas of Egypt, who was buried here in A.D. 296.

Included Basilicas and Monasteries, forming a small Christian community, but was destroyed during the Islamic conquest of Egypt.

Very few structures remain, mostly just foundations, and it remains on the World Heritage in Danger list.
