Nubian Monuments from Abu Simbel to Philae

阿布辛拜勒至菲莱的努比亚遗址

🇮🇹 Egypt📅 1979 Inscribed

This outstanding archaeological area contains such magnificent monuments as the Temples of Ramses II at Abu Simbel and the Sanctuary of Isis at Philae, which were saved from the rising waters of the Nile thanks to the International Campaign launched by UNESCO, in 1960 to 1980.

Insight I

Due to the construction of the Aswan Dam, in order to rescue the monuments that would be submerged, 50 countries, under the leadership of UNESCO, completed a relocation project. This process led to the creation of the World Heritage Convention in 1972, which directly influenced the establishment of the UNESCO World Heritage system.

Insight II

The site contains numerous monuments spanning from the Old Kingdom to the New Kingdom, as well as the Ptolemaic and Roman periods (each with its own dedicated Wikipedia page).

Insight III

The design and layout of Abu Simbel allow rays of the sun to penetrate the innermost chamber twice annually on the equinoxes.

Insight IV

The Philae Temple Complex contains the Graffito of Esmet-Akhom, the last known inscription in Egyptian Hieroglyphs, dated August 24, 394 AD.
