The Palace of Versailles was the principal residence of the French kings from the time of Louis XIV to Louis XVI. Embellished by several generations of architects, sculptors, decorators and landscape architects, it provided Europe with a model of the ideal royal residence for over a century.

Built by Louis XIV from a former hunting ground, serving as an artistic and cultural statement, embodying absolute monarchy.

The architectural style spans Renaissance to Neoclassical, with its gardens influencing many later European palaces.

Insight III

A witness to modern history, from the rise and fall of the Bourbon dynasty to the French Revolution, which led to the sale of 17,000 palace items. It hosted treaties recognizing American independence and ending World War I (Treaty of Versailles). Since 1830, it has functioned as the French History Museum.
