The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO.
Insight I
Known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," Dubrovnik, despite suffering severe damage from the 1667 earthquake, still retains numerous Renaissance architectural masterpieces. Its fortifications were used as the filming location for King’s Landing in Game of Thrones, and the city is considered one of the most "over-touristed" destinations in Europe.
Insight II
Home to the world’s oldest arboretum (Trsteno Arboretum, established before 1492) and the oldest European pharmacy still in operation (established in 1317).
Insight III
Once part of the Republic of Ragusa, Dubrovnik maintained independence through skilled diplomacy. After Napoleon’s occupation and withdrawal, it became part of the Habsburg Empire, and later, Austria-Hungary.
Insight IV
The Dubrovnik Shtokavian dialect served as the basis for standardized Croatian, highlighting the literary influence of Ragusa.
Insight V
Like the Palace of Diocletian, UNESCO’s official webpage lacks detailed information on this site.
