The refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie forms an integral part of this architectural complex, begun in Milan in 1463 and reworked at the end of the 15th century by Bramante. On the north wall is The Last Supper, the unrivalled masterpiece painted between 1495 and 1497 by Leonardo da Vinci, whose work was to herald a new era in the history of art.

Insight I

The Last Supper's handling of space, mastery of perspective, expression of motion, and depiction of complex human emotion have made it one of the most recognizable paintings in the Western world.
It is among the earliest masterpieces to focus on a precise and fleeting moment in time, rather than an extended narrative.

Insight II

Due to Leonardo's use of the experimental Tempera technique instead of the traditional Fresco, the mural began deteriorating shortly after completion. Since the 18th century, numerous restoration efforts have helped bring the artwork back to light.

Insight III

During World War II, the wall bearing the painting miraculously survived the aerial bombardment, even though most of the surrounding building was destroyed.
