The Hypogeum is an enormous subterranean structure excavated c. 2500 B.C., using cyclopean rigging to lift huge blocks of coralline limestone. Perhaps originally a sanctuary, it became a necropolis in prehistoric times.
Insight I
An enormous subterranean structure hidden for thousands of years (4000 B.C. – 2500 B.C.). It is the only known subterranean labyrinth in Europe, with numerous human remains and artefacts unearthed.
Insight II
The name “Ħal Saflieni” likely emerged after the arrival of Muslims, highlighting how long the site vanished from human awareness.
