The vast plains of the Serengeti comprise 1.5 million ha of savannah. The annual migration to permanent water holes of vast herds of herbivores (wildebeest, gazelles and zebras), followed by their predators, is one of the most impressive natural events in the world.

Insight I

The Serengeti plains host the largest remaining unaltered animal migration on Earth: the annual movement of two million wildebeests, along with hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras, followed closely by their predators, all in pursuit of fresh pastures and water.
The volcanic soils, combined with the ecological effects of the migration, create one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet—supporting the largest population of ungulates and the highest density of large carnivores in the world.
